As majority of the villagers is traditionally agriculture based, having
considerable land holdings and most of the cultivated area is
mono-cropped, no doubt irrigation is the first requirement of the
people. Apart from slightly bigger schemes like Nandini reservoir, the
successful irrigation schemes in the district are individual wells and
community managed micro lift irrigation schemes. The individual wells
were constructed using funds like MWS, Meso etc. The community managed
micro lift irrigation schemes were implemented using funds from BPDP
(Bihar Plateau Development Project), MWS, Meso, JRY etc. Most of these
successful schemes were implemented through techno-managerial assistance
of Professional Assistance for Development Action (PRADAN), a national
level NGO working in this district since 1992-93. It is also felt that,
creation of more number of water bodies is necessary for the area
through construction of water harvesting structures. This is because the
average annual rainfall of the district is about 1200 mm but is erratic.
Construction of the water harvesting structures will be helpful in
utilizing the rainwater. At the same time there are many minor
irrigation schemes were constructed 20-30 years back But due to lack of
regular repair and maintenance over the years, almost all these have
lost their created potential and are either non-functioning or
functioning at reduced capacity. Their restoration will immediately help
in improving Kharif irrigation and boost up Rabi irrigation. The
department of minor irrigation has expertise in this. So two types of
irrigation projects are proposed under RSVY:
(a)
Construction of water harvesting structures, implementing micro-lift
irrigation schemes and renovating the existing minor irrigation schemes
through Minor Irrigation Department,
(b)
Implementing Community Managed Micro Lift Irrigation Schemes with
technical assistance of PRADAN.
