The
total ready bird consumption in Ranchi city is around 90 quintals per
day and that of Lohardaga is 5 quintals per day. Approximately 100
quintals of ready birds enter into Ranchi city per day. These birds come
from Midnapur in West Bengal. So there is a potential of poultry
activity in the district with all forward and backward linkages.
Professional Assistance for Development Action (PRADAN) has experience
of doing this activity with small rearers in Hoshengabad district in
Madhya Pradesh. There 300 rearers have been organized into a
co-operative namely Kesla Poultry Co-operative Society Limited. Each
rearer has a lot size of 300 birds. Based upon this successful
experience and seeing the favorable market condition in the region,
PRADAN has initiated poultry activity in five districts of Jharkhand.
Also a proposal has been sanctioned by the Co-operative Department of
Jharkhand to promote five small poultry rearers co-operative in five
districts. Lohardaga is one among these districts. Here the organization
has already started the activity and at present there are thirty-four
small rearers in Kuru block each having a lot size of 200 birds and
marketing has already started in Lohardaga, Gumla and Daltongaunj. The
co-operative society is in the process of registration. There is a plan
of reaching 500 rearers each having a lot size of 200 to 300 birds
within three years. The co-operative department of Jharkhand has
sanctioned to provide working capital and subsidy to construct sheds
(only for tribal families). To attend the financial sustainability of
the co-operative, some vehicles, equipments and additional
infrastructure is required.
Objective
To
provide some vehicles, equipments and infrastructure to the small
poultry rearers' co-operative society to attend financial sustainability
very soon.
Mode of Implementation
Professional Assistance for Development Action (PRADAN) will train,
organize and establish forward-backward linkages of the poultry rearers
co-operative. The DRDA will purchase the vehicles and equipments as per
the specification provided by PRADAN and the co-operative society and
transfer them to the registered co-operative. The plan and specification
for store rooms, retail shops and ready bird warehouse will be provided
by PRADAN and the district administration will construct these
infrastructures in consultation with PRADAN and the co-operative
society. The land required for construction of stores at village level
will be arranged by the rearers of that village. The district will
provide government lands for construction of warehouse, retail shops and
feed factories. After construction the infrastructures will be
transferred to the co-operative society. The co-operative society will
maintain all these assets and report on the functioning of the
co-operative in regular basis. If the co-operative society seizes to
function, all these assets will be transferred to DRDA.
